Technology Assessments
ComSource engaged a partner affiliate to initiate a consolidation
study of the existing IBM iSeries servers in a customer's Data
Center. Each iSeries Server was running an individual client's
workload with different sets of customers on them.
As part of the consolidation study, each machine and its respective
workload had to be reviewed through a process of performance data
metric analysis. Factors such as CPU utilization, interactive
requirement, disk utilization, percentage of I/O reads/writes,
memory utilization, paging and growth rates were all examined.
Each workload was analyzed during peak usage such as month end
to ensure that peak averages were taken into consideration. (Example

After performing this analysis, the ComSource team was able
to suggest a plan to cut costs and improve efficiencies with the
system management. This plan proposed consolidating the multiple
iSeries servers into one iSeries model 830 along with LPAR implementation
and workload migration services. In the end the customer was able
to cut cost of ownership by improving overall machine performance
and decreasing the cost of maintenance.
